SILVIO WOLF
SCALA ZERO è il titolo del progetto realizzato da Silvio Wolf sul Teatro alla Scala di Milano. L'artista ha concentrato la sua ricerca sull'idea di teatro come luogo della rappresentazione e della finzione, creando immagini fisse e in movimento in cui appaiono al contempo gli spazi fisici del teatro e i processi immateriali che vi si svolgono.
Wolf ricerca attraverso l'identità pubblica e privata, palese ed occulta di questo luogo straordinario, l'unità di visibile ed invisibile, di tempo e spazio, forme di sintesi di presente e d'altrove.
Per la parte fotografica del progetto ha utilizzato le zone pubbliche ma deserte del teatro (foyer, palchi, scale e corridoi) e gli occulti sistemi di controllo e di comando della sala e del palcoscenico (controlli luci, microprocessori, quadro sinottico, monitor di sorveglianza, schermi dei computer, biglietteria elettronica).
Nelle sue opere è sempre presente l'idea della doppia natura del luogo, ricercata in presenza delle porte, degli specchi e del boccascena, che l'artista, nella sua particolare visione del teatro, avverte come soglie. Queste soglie, cariche di valore emozionale e simbolico, sono dunque i veri soggetti delle sue opere, espresse nitidamente attraverso doppie visioni simultanee, oppure nelle sfocate percezioni degli spazi che vanno come scomparendo.
Nel film SCALA ZERO, il cui storyboard si sviluppa a partire dalle immagini fotografiche esposte, si narra del viaggio d'un uomo attraverso il Teatro. Il film è tutto girato in soggettiva e con suoni in presa diretta. Lo spazio e gli avvenimenti appaiono visti attraverso l'occhio del protagonista, di cui mai é svelata l'identità, mentre lo spettatore s'identifica col suo sguardo errante. Man mano che il soggetto percorre le soglie di questo viaggio misterioso, appare sempre più evidente la vita segreta del teatro, quella realtà celata allo sguardo del pubblico dal neoclassico impianto architettonico, dall'opulenta struttura di ori e di stucchi, legni pregiati e velluti della sua parte monumentale: quella grandiosa messa in scena di cui è il pubblico l'inconsapevole attore.
Attraverso l'esperienza di questo viaggio fantastico è infine il Teatro a rivelarsi protagonista sulle scene d'un inquietante altrove presente: il Luogo è l'evento.
Il film, girato in 16 mm con trattamento elettronico e presentato alla Biennale d'Architettura di Venezia del 2000 nel Padiglione degli Stati Uniti, viene ora proiettato per la prima volta in una galleria d'arte nella versione integrale director's cut, in versione DVD video con suono stereofonico.

SCALA ZERO is the title of a project created by Silvio Wolf on the La Scala opera house of Milan. The artist concentrated his research on the idea of theatre as a place of representation and make believe, creating still and moving pictures in which both physical places in the opera house and the immaterial processes which occur there are shown at the same time.
Wolf seeks the unity of the visible and the invisible, of time and space through the public and private, manifest and hidden identity of this extraordinary place. He seeks ways of synthesising the present and elsewhere.
For the photographic part of the project he used public, but deserted areas of the opera house (foyer, boxes, stairways and corridors) and the hidden systems for monitoring and controlling the auditorium and the stage (light controls, microprocessors, stage light control panels, security monitors, computer screens, electronic booking systems). His works always contain the idea of the dual nature of places that are sought in the presence of doors, mirrors and the proscenium of the stage, which the artist sees as thresholds, in his particular vision of theatre. These thresholds are charged with emotional and symbolic meaning. They are the true subjects of his works, either sharply depicted through double simultaneous visions or in blurred perceptions of spaces as if they were disappearing.
The storyboard of the film SCALA ZERO is based on the photos exhibited and tells the story of a man’s journey through the opera house. The entire film was shot with a “subjective camera” and with the live soundtrack, which means that the space and the events are seen through the eyes of the protagonist, whose identity is never revealed, while the spectator identifies with his wandering glance. As the subject passes over the thresholds of this mysterious journey, we gain an increasingly clearer view of the secret life of the opera house: that reality hidden to the public gaze by the neoclassic architecture, the opulent gold décor and stuccowork, the velvet and the precious timber of the monumental part: that great stage on which the public is the unwitting actor.
Finally, through the experience of this fantastic journey, it is the opera house itself that is revealed as the protagonist on the scenes of a disquieting present elsewhere: the Place is the event.
SCALA ZERO, originally shot on 16 mm film with digital post-production was first presented at the Biennial of Venice in the United States pavilion in the year 2000, and is now shown in a reedited “director’s cut” version on DVD in stereo.
